You will be aware that as part of the Government’s reform of the health system, two significant new health agencies are being established: the Māori Health Authority and Health New Zealand.

Ahead of establishing a permanent Māori Health Authority and Health NZ the Minister of Health intends to establish interim entities as departmental agencies hosted by the Ministry of Health.

As a first step in the establishment of these new agencies, a Steering Group has been appointed to oversee the nomination and shortlisting process for the Māori Authority.  The Steering Group is now calling for nominations for candidates to form the Interim Board for the Maori Health Authority. In the first instance we are approaching the Iwi Authorities and the National Iwi Leaders Group for nominations. This will be followed shortly after with an approach to the wider Māori community and health and disabilities sector.

The Steering Group is being supported by Atahaia Consultancy, who will undertake the initial recruitment process and support the Steering Group in the selection process to achieve a shortlist of candidates, culminating in a list of suitable applicants to be presented by the Steering Group to the Minister of Health by 2 July 2021.

The Steering Group welcomes nominations for the Interim Board of the Māori Health Authority. Interim Board members should have ongoing links to Te Ao Māori and the Board as a whole should have experience relevant to Treaty of Waitangi relationships with state agencies, Māori health, equity, governance, strategic planning, engagement with Māori, policy development, finance, funding and strategic commissioning.

If you would like to submit an expression of interest please complete the application process online  at www.healthreformboardexpressionofinterest.co.nz as soon as possible. We are conscious of the tight time frame but also recognise the need to take advantage of the opportunities that the proposed Māori Health Authority will bring.  If you have any further queries, please send an email to atahaia@actrix.co.nz and we will respond as quickly as possible.

The Steering Group has also been asked to provide advice on appropriate options for governance and accountability arrangements for the Māori Health Authority.  To that end we will facilitate a series of hui with Iwi/Māori in June using a combination of online and face to face discussions. We will send out the details shortly.

Meanwhile we look forward to receiving Interim Board nominations before 18 June 2021.
