Cawthron Ring Science Scholarships
Two new $7,500 scholarships aimed at Te Tauihu students are available now.
Cawthron Institute is offering scholarships to Year 2 students who are considering continuing their tertiary (polytechnic or university) studies in 2026. All scholarships are valued at $7,500 each (tax free). We have two scholarships available for 2026. Applications close 12 February 2026.

Scholarship details:
- Preference will be given to students intending to study freshwater or marine science in their second year of undergraduate study
- Preference will be given to students with a connection to Te Tau Ihu (the Top of the South Island)
Eligibility to apply:
- New Zealand citizen or permanent resident.
- Intending to undertake full-time study at undergraduate level at a tertiary institution in 2026.
- Student who has completed their first year of study at the time of application i.e. is undertaking subjects at 200 level or above in 2026.
Details:
- The student agrees that they will have articles written about them and shared by Cawthron as a recipient of a funded scholarship.
- A tax free grant of $7,500 will be paid to the student.
- Students will need to demonstrate their connection to the Te Tau Ihu region.
- Preference for the scholarship will be given to students intending to study freshwater or marine science in their second year of undergraduate study.
- Preference for the scholarship will be given to students with a connection to Te Tauihu.
