Cawthron Ring Science Scholarships

Cawthron Institute is offering scholarships to Year 2 students who are considering continuing their tertiary (polytechnic or university) studies in 2026. All scholarships are valued at $7,500 each (tax free). We have two scholarships available for 2026. Applications close 12 February 2026.

Scholarship details:

• Preference will be given to students intending to study freshwater or marine science in their second year of undergraduate study
• Preference will be given to students with a connection to Te Tau Ihu (the Top of the South Island) 

Eligibility to apply: 

• New Zealand citizen or permanent resident. 
• Intending to undertake full-time study at undergraduate level at a tertiary institution in 2026. 
• Student who has completed their first year of study at the time of application i.e. is undertaking subjects at 200 level or above in 2026.

Details:

• The student agrees that they will have articles written about them and shared by Cawthron as a recipient of a funded scholarship.  
• A tax free grant of $7,500 will be paid to the student.
• Students will need to demonstrate their connection to the Te Tau Ihu region. 
• Preference for the scholarship will be given to students intending to study freshwater or marine science in their second year of undergraduate study.
• Preference for the scholarship will be given to students with a connection to Te Tauihu.
