Te Pitau Whakarei Karahipi: Help make an environmental avatar
Cawthron Institute are offering a 10-week paid placement ($7,500 scholarship) over the 2025–26 summer period.
The project involves co-developing an AI Environmental Avatar – a digital “voice” for rivers and ecosystems – that combines scientific data and mātauranga Māori to help communities connect with and care for their environment.
We are seeking a Māori tertiary student with interests in environmental science, ecology, science communication, or data science/engineering, and who is willing to engage with their iwi, marae, or hapū as part of the placement.
