Dutch Ambassador welcomed at Onetahua Marae
A delegation representing The Netherlands including the Dutch Ambassador (Ard van der Vorst) and the Mayor of Westerkwartier visited Te Tauihu recently.
The town of Westerkwartier has an ongoing relationship with the Mohua region as it was the first place sighted by Abel Tasman on his voyage here of 1642.
Abel Tasman was born in the village of Lutjegast, which is in the municipality of Westerkwartier. Some of the group from The Netherlands had visited Onetahua a number of times.
The group visited the Abel Tasman Monument (which is a Ngāti Rārua statutory acknowledgement area) and the Anaweka Waka. They also looked at the plans for a new building to house the waka.
Whānau, trustees and kaimahi supported this kaupapa, along with Manawhenua ki Mohua, the Tasman District Council and others
