Ngā Niho Taniwha: Scholarships

Te Whai Oranga wānanga to be held in Wairau in 2026

Ngā Niho Taniwha: Scholarships

Recreation Aotearoa champions high-quality recreation for the benefit of all our communities.

Ngā Niho Taniwha was created to help those working in the sector to deepen their understanding of recreation through a Māori lens. It explores pūrākau, tākaro Māori, and movement to reshape how recreation is perceived here in Aotearoa to better support our communities.

For 2026, we are proud to be collaborating with Hawaiki Kura for the second time to deliver this wānanga in Wairau.

Scholarships & Opportunities

We want to ensure this opportunity is accessible to the people of Te Tauihu/Wairau region.

  1. Rangatahi Scholarships: We have full scholarships available for Rangatahi Māori (16+) to attend. We would love to see young people from te tau ihu who have an interest in the outdoors, leadership, or wellbeing take up these spots.
  2. Kaimahi Development: You may have staff or whānau working in the play, sport, recreation, or conservation sectors who rarely get access to professional development like this. This is a chance for them to connect with others and grow their skills in a wānanga setting.
