Upgraded Port facility opens

Ngā iwi waru o Te Tauihu, along with industry and community leaders, helped open Port Nelson's new marine haul-out and maintenance facility, Calwell, on Friday.

Upgraded Port facility opens

The $29-million upgrade features a slipway and hardstand area supported by a 550-tonne boat hoist. This means boats of up to 2,400 tonnes can be serviced locally.

The upgraded facility improves efficiency, safety and capacity, and will create new opportunities for local businesses, support skilled jobs, and increase the region’s ability to attract and retain marine-related work, sometimes called the blue economy.

The redevelopment was co-funded by Port Nelson, Nelson City Council, and Central Government, administered through the Kānoa - Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Rārua is part of the blue economy cluster Moananui.
