Kia tu katoa rā, te Mauri Ora, me te Ohaoha, me te Hononga, me te Taiao o Ngāti Rārua, a te tau 2040.
By 2040, a viable Ngāti Rārua Culture, Economy, Society and Environment.
We will achieve this with our focus on three pillars, a brief outline of this is below.
Hononga: Our Social Strategy
You often hear it said that “people are our real wealth”. Our social strategy is about developing our membership base and the connections we make between our members.
From a social capital perspective, it’s the strength of our membership base and the connections we make between our members that is important. The long hīkoi to settlement has helped us identify a small and committed group of Iwi members, now our challenge is introduce more members into the frame.
We also need to know ourselves better - our whakapapa, our history, where we live, what we can contribute, what we need and our aspirations for ourselves and us as a collective.
We are designing and embedding a system that ensures we are focused on developing our social capital and attracting members to be involved with their wider whānau and iwi.

Mauri Ora: Our Cultural Strategy
The Mauri Ora (cultural) pillar is a critical kaupapa and focusses on our identity as Ngāti Rārua. Looking forward, the Rūnanga is committed to supporting the establishment of a dedicated Ngāti Rārua marae at Wairau and continuing to support our other marae; Whakatu, Te Āwhina and Onetahua. Our marae are a vital part of our activity as manawhenua, and an avenue to progress the further cultural development of Ngāti Rārua.
History, whakapapa, waiata, tikanga and kawa specific to Ngāti Rārua will be explored, debated and celebrated as part of an ongoing series of wānanga and engagement with iwi members. Through our cultural strategy we hope our members will identify proudly as Ngāti Rārua because they will be strong in their Ngāti Rāruatanga.
Ohaoha: Our Economic Strategy
We have identified two ways to develop a viable Ngāti Rārua economy by 2040.
- By growing the Rūnanga economic base on behalf of the iwi; and
- By growing the entire Ngāti Rārua economy through investing in the business of our members.
The first approach describes our short and medium term focus, whereas the second approach represents our long term focus. Our Statement of Investment Policy and Objectives (SIPO) outlines how much capital will be invested in strategically growing our current asset base, and how much will be invested in growing the entire Ngāti Rārua economy. This will change over time and will be reported on in more detail at the Annual General Meetings.
We are continuing to grow our capactiy to meet our investment objectives within our SIPO and our robust financial management policies. We are moving from a predominantly passive investment strategy to one that is more active and look forward to sharing results with our whānau. We are now required to change to an active investment strategy to meet the outcomes of our 2040 strategic plan.
